The Eighth International Conference on  Language Education Policy will be held on March 15-17, 2017 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA.

The conference focuses on language education policy and the crisis of refugee or migrant children in the schools of the heightened security environment of Western nations. The focus is on cultures and ways of life that often are misrepresented, and also on languages and repositories of knowledge as affected by the expected linguistic assimilation through schooling. Linguistic diversity and humanity’s knowledge base are also affected. This process produces difficulties tied to identities, which displaced children and youth must negotiate. With the main focus on the role of teachers, teacher education vs. media representation and fear factors like Islamophobia, the Conference addresses the reality for the very young up to university students who are faced with often hostile conditions. By bringing together scholars of relevant areas to discuss these issues in an open, productive, and calm manner, we hope to explore methodological as well as conceptual issues, review the extensive work that has already documented post-9/11 experiences and ways out of the conundrum, create materials and databases for teachers, and expand the field for researchers of all ages and many related specialties.

We hope to discuss and demonstrate specific analytical and interpretive approaches, such as semiotic analysis, conditional probability clusters, implicative analysis and the analysis of correspondence that are proper to the French-speaking/Spanish-speaking and English-speaking cultures of research in education, along with current American approaches in education research, such as autoethnography, participatory action research, organizational learning studies based on focus and video study groups, and narrative inquiry. 

We are inviting presenter abstracts for research presentations and snapshots of pedagogy, that relate directly to your research and/or teaching. We are inviting presenter abstracts for research presentations and snapshots of pedagogy (10 minutes), and roundtable (80 minutes) that relate directly to your research and/or teaching. We will adopt the format of roundtables for the Conference, in which 3 researchers present reflections on their experience for about 25 minutes each with conversational interactions during the presentation. Abstracts should be sent to François Victor Tochon and are due by February 8, 2017.

Notification of acceptances will be ongoing.

Full research papers should be submitted by June 1st, 2017 for publication in the Proceedings. 

These submissions will undergo a double blind peer review for publication as book chapters by Deep University Press.
