       Policy for PEACE:

Language Education Unlimited

co-editors Francois Tochon & Kristine Harrison (conference organizers)

The book explicates institutionalized violence, yet tells a story of achieving peace through language education policy, citing examples from numerous countries, situations, and policy frameworks. The book has 14 chapters that span numerous countries and cultures—a fascinating in-depth look at China in 4 chapters, Timor-Leste, Japan, Spain, France, U.S., Brazil; in addition to a few theoretical chapters. The book order is actually a crescendo with a beautiful ending—it begins and ends in China, balancing the usual western dominance. Sometimes a chapter’s focus is seemingly on Language Policy (LP) instead of Language Education Policy (LEP), but LP does not really exist without LEP: How do language policies relate to education? How are LP reflected and implemented through education, for example the teaching of the languages, or assessment through the languages? How do these play out in various other key language domains such as the workforce or legal and health services? The conceptualizing and implementation of the field of LEP is a work in progress, while this book stretches the field into the critical arena of international peace education.
